"Fly By Night"
Interviewed by Paul Dale Roberts, HPI General Manager

Date: November 27, 2009

Question:  Natalie, to get this interview started, can you tell us something personal about yourself?

Answer: I have been a licensed funeral director and embalmer for ten years. I enjoy the art of restoring human
remains for the purpose of leaving to the afterlife. I am also a singer and musician currently working with the
local Sacramento industrial band Savi0r, who will be performing at the Whiskey A Go Go in December.

Question:  Can you explain your titles for Darkness and what is Darkness?

Answer: I am the sole creator, promoter and headlining DJ for the club. Darkness was originally created two
years ago to give the Sacramento area an alternative night club event that was based on collaboration from
patrons through special monthly events (special theme nights, art shows, and special guest DJs and musical
acts).

Question:  Does Darkness embrace the vampire culture and do you embrace the culture too?

Answer: In general we are not associated with the vampire culture. However, we accept and embrace them as a
faction of the culture. The vampire culture and all macabre aspects of life are embraced by the Gothic culture.

Question:  Many times that I have seen you, I noticed you dress in black.  Would you consider yourself as part of
the Goth culture?

Answer: I would consider myself a part of Goth culture. However, I do not always wear all black. I wear black
along with other dark dramatic colors, which I think many people who consider themselves a part of the Goth
culture do as well.

Question:  How is Darkness taking off?  Does Sacramento have a large Goth culture as compared to San
Francisco?

Answer: Since Darkness began in 2007, the club event has become a popular staple of the alternative club
scene in Northern California. Sacramento itself does not have a very large gothic culture scene, but the
surrounding areas add to the scene (Redding, Chico, San Francisco, etc.). San Francisco still has the most
thriving scene, but I believe that many of the people who are from the San Francisco scene are moving toward
the Sacramento area due to the housing prices. Therefore, the Sacramento scene is growing.

Question:  What kind of music does Darkness play?

Answer: Darkness plays: The Cure, New Order, Depeche Mode, Danielle Dax, VNV Nation, Skinny Puppy, Nitzer
Ebb, Suicide Commando, Bauhaus, Soiuxie and the Banshees, Client, and The Presets just to name a few.  In
general, we play Goth, industrial, new wave 80s, and electro.

Question: What is your favorite song?

Answer:  My farvorite song that I never tire of is Only When I Lose Myself by Depeche Mode – such a sexy,
elegant song!

Question:  You are talking about opening a second club, what is that all about?

Answer: Actually, I just received an opportunity to move Darkness to Necropolis in Old Sacramento. Necropolis
will have two full dance floors, which will allow Darkness to expand in the way I have always imagined it. We will
also be able to support live performances and other entertainment associated with the genres of music being
played at Darkness. The grand opening of Darkness at Necropolis will be Saturday, December 5th with an
opening performance by Savi0r. The Old Ironsides location will be kept and changed into a different nightclub
event that will be more geared toward electroclash and new wave 80s music only.

Question: What are your hobbies and recreational activities?

Answers: In my spare time I write music, oil painting and other art projects, and of course go dancing.

Question:  Where overseas have you been?  Was it business or pleasure?

Answer: My favorite place I’ve been to is London, England. I traveled there to visit a friend for two weeks and
absolutely fell in love with it. I still need to travel to continental Europe and hope to do that in the near future.

Question:  I have been to London too, I must agree with you Natalie.  If you had 6 dinner guests, 3 historical and
3 fictional, who would they be and why?

Answer:  Historical guests: Anubis (Egyptian god of embalming) – he might be considered fictional to some
people, Mother Theresa (to discuss how she could be so loving in a world of chaos), and Oscar Wilde (to bring
the dinner party a little more wit and sarcasm).
Fictional guest: Dexter Morgan (to understand the mind of a functional psychopath and I would like to talk to a
blood splatter expert – sound like a cool job!), Hannibal Lecter (I find him charming), and  George Lass from
Dead Like Me (I want to know more about the after life).

Sorry, sounds like a dysfunctional dinner party!

Question:  What are your favorite TV shows, movies, cartoons, books?
I don’t have a lot of time for TV or reading these days but some of my favorite shows are Dexter, Dead Like Me,
Six Feet Under, Intervention, Obsessed, and The First 48 Hours.

Question:  This ends the interview, any words of wisdom for your fans?

Answer: Be yourself and you will prevail!
